Maintenance of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon  (Korthals)

Grooming

Among humans, the bald and the beardless do not have to incur hairdresser's fees, nor the expense of buying a comb or a razor. For the toilet, a good soap is enough. On the other hand, hairy natures must invest in this type of material if they wish to regularly maintain their head, keep their identity and the finesse of their features because without maintenance, the hair covers the skull and hides the shapes of the head, the beard and the mustaches invade the face and mask the face. For the heads of stop griffins, it is the same, but here things are even more complicated. In addition to the comb, you need a currycomb, the razor becomes a comb-knife and the shampoos are more specific… In addition, a horsehair glove is very useful.

Aesthetic grooming is more complex, though human hair fashion
sometimes turns out to be surprisingly subtle. A beautiful, well-typed griffin's head should be
well supplied with hair, with good trimmings. To be highlighted, it
requires proper maintenance on a regular basis. When we don't
yourself for lack of knowledge or quite simply for lack of time,
do not resort to any "figaro canine" who does not know the KORTHALS. 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_

The hairstyle of the head of the KORTHALS is particular, it is not necessary to cut any
comment.          _cc781905-5cde -3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_

Well-defined eyebrows should not cover the eyes so as not to hide the
view, mustaches and beards must be copious to protect the face and him
give it its characteristic square shape. These trims require combing
regularly to clean and air them. When the eyebrows are too long, we must
deburr them, it is advisable to pull out the dead hair and to taper the ends that are too long; never cut them. The use of scissors is absolutely forbidden, it generally leaves scale marks and it is camouflage. You can use a knife comb if necessary.

We have said it before, DE GINGINS explained it: there is no undercoat on the head, the head hair is an expansion of it.

•  The slightly domed shape of the top of the skull requires a fairly short fleece. The use of the knife comb is practical. It is necessary to maintain a short hair, of an approximate length of one centimeter. You can also use a mower, many amateurs do, but the problem is that the mowing is often done too close, which is not very becoming, not to mention the snags and ladders...

•  Similarly, the hair on the ears must be worked. It tends to lie there on the top and on the edge. As a result, the shape of the ear changes, it widens, but above all it lengthens. It is important to restore its shape by shortening the top hairs and deburring with a knife comb all those that protrude from the edges. Again, the mower is usable but tricky to handle.

•  The area under the eyes, just above the cheeks and extending to the temples also requires grooming. The growing hairs give thickness here and it is important to lighten slightly with a knife comb, respect the eyelashes. -136bad5cf58d_

•  A small space, located against the inner corner of the eye, at the base of the stop and at the start of the muzzle, corresponds to the beginning of the whiskers. At this place long hairs stand up forming small tufts that hide the dog's eyes. These small tufts are also unsightly and it is preferable to remove them. This releases the birth of the chamfer and restores its natural length.

•  The underthroat and the neck in turn require a good "clearing". The neck must be powerful, but it must remain harmonious. An excess of hair in this area can have the effect of a short neck, tucked into the shoulders. Similarly the nape and the neckline must have a thick coat but not too long. The neckline must keep a slender, free and elegant look, favoring a beautiful expression in the carriage of the head.
Head grooming is a work of art. As you can see, it's not about cutting, trimming and shaving all over the place. Jean CASTAING very rightly explained that grooming a griffin should have nothing in common with that of a poodle or a fox terrier!

Some areas must be worked with moderation in order to reveal the carvings of the face. Thinning the fleece on the skull, the temples, the zygomatics and the sub-orbital region is to reduce the mass of the head. This removes the heaviness caused by exuberant hair. The head should show its true expression.

A relatively recent fad is to shave all those areas with overabundant hair. This is the "Provençal" cut, brought into vogue in an already distant period by an Occitan breeder. The trimmer prunes too much the aforementioned spaces which come out shaved, it generally encroaches on the cheeks, hollows them out and cuts into the beard... the cubic harmony of the muzzle is broken. Finally, the eyebrows are cut "squared", in visor, the skulls have the clean cut of the legionaries and the necklines resemble those of the Spanish GALGOS. The general appearance of the head is similar to that of a SCHNAUZER with drooping ears! This type of grooming gives the opposite of a natural expression and hardens the features. It borders on disguise and should not be tolerated, at least it should be penalized in exhibitions.

Don't forget the inside of the ears. Probably, this is the most delicate part of the head. The hair retains dust and small debris. Excess earwax sticks the hairs at the entrance to the ear canal. It is annoying for the smell, moreover it promotes the development of an auricular cathar. It is treated with hot water and glycerin; it is easy to practice hair removal yourself that obstructs the entrance to the ear canals, it is painless for the dog. A good judge always checks the cleanliness of the ears, it is a criterion of decorum on the part of the presenter.       _cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b-8d_bad5

Regular cleaning of the teeth is necessary. Tartar accumulates on the dental crown. In addition to the unpleasant effect, the side effects are significant, the collar loosens, cavities set in. The bad breath encountered is also the cause.
